Voltage testers?

Question by dragonboats: Voltage testers?
This question is about using voltage testors. I have one that measures 120V and 240V. The tester has a red wire and a black wire. I removed a thermostat from the wall. The wires coming out of the wall is a black wire, a white wire, and a ground wire.

Question: How do I test the voltage? Which wire do I touch to what?

put the red lead on the black wire and the black lead on the ground (bare or green). while the tester is set to 120V you should get 120 as a reading +/-. Do the same to the white wire. Red to white, Blk to ground. If you get 120V again you have 240V between the Blk and White wires. If not, then you have 120V on the Blk and 0 on the white (neutral) and 0 on the ground.

One Response to Voltage testers?

The BLACK lead should go to the bare wire to the thermostat. With RED lead on your tester test the BLACK then test the WHITE. If you have electric baseboard heat that is on a 2 pole breaker(220v) then you should have 110v on both the black and the white wire. IF your electric baseboard heat is on a single pole breaker then you should read 110v on the black and 0v on the white
